Healthy Meals, Healthy Mind-Packing the Right Lunch for Your Kid

Every night when you arrive home from work, you do some cleaning, make dinner for the evening and pack lunch for your child or children. That last task tends to give you some problems though. You want your children to eat their lunch and not just toss it away, but you also want the meal to be healthy. How can you accomplish this?

The Main Event
Sandwiches are popular for school lunches, so always choose whole wheat bread. When selecting cold cuts, buy them fresh from the deli as packaged ones have too much salt. Lunch boxes are so innovative these days though, and plenty of devices exist for keeping meals either warm or cool. Homemade vegetable soup is another excellent choice. You can also make some whole wheat pasta loaded with vegetables.

The Drink
Maybe your child buys milk at school, which is common for children to do. Be sure that it's of a low fat or fat free variety. If these options aren't available, you can purchase your own healthier milk containers and pack them in the box. Water is always going to be a big hit when it comes to health, and it will keep your child hydrated, especially during the warmer months. Flavored water is another possibility, but please make sure to read the label to see how much sugar is included in the drink.

Snack Suggestions
Fruits and vegetables, as long as they are cut as to not present a choking hazard, will never go out of style as healthy options for students. Provide a small container of dipping sauce to make them more appealing, or create your own applesauce at home. Other suggestions include soup as a side dish for a sandwich lunch or a container of quinoa as a side dish for a Mexican main course. You could also bake some sweet potatoes and mash them up as a treat for during the Thanksgiving season. Beans or a small side of whole wheat pasta with some homemade sauce are both other ideas for that special snack.

Dessert
Now, let's go to one of the hardest parts of a meal to keep healthy. Yogurt is also a good idea, and you can check individual packages to find the ones that are lowest in fat and sugar content. You could also do fruit with a yogurt dipping sauce. Now, sometimes, you will just want to give the kids a special treat. When you want to give them a baked good, be sure that they are homemade. You'll know exactly what is going into the food, and they won't be coming out of some package that is laden with extra salt to keep everything fresh.

It's difficult to make the right choices for children when it comes to eating healthy, but, ultimately, it's all about finding a balance. You should give them foods that are healthy but that are also enjoyable. Furthermore, remember, every now and then it is fine to give them a less healthy treat.

Costumes 4 Less Party Decorations #SeussBirthday

Every party needs decorations, and I tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to decorations!  I actually ordered gifts for my daughter AND party decorations all in the same place from Costumes4Less.com  Yes, Costumes 4 Less also has party supplies and gifts!  This awesome online retailer literally has it all!

I ordered a ton to give this party the snazz it needed...here's what I got:

-Cat in the Hat cardboard cut-out stand up.
-Cat in the Hat hooded beach towel
-Cat in the Hat chair
-Red and Bermuda blue tablewear
-Party pack with red/blue balloons, streamers, decor
-Plastic champagne flutes
-Red paper lanterns garland
-Blue flag banner

I know there was a bunch more that I ordered along with that!  Anyways, a couple of the things I ordered I modified to make more "catty" decorations.  These were bought decorations with extra special time put into them giving the party more of a diy feel.

I especially order the red champagne flutes because when I was a kid I always loved pretending to drink out of the fancy cups.  Well these flues were fancy with a twist!  I painted white lines on all of the flutes so that they would resemble Cat in the Hat's hat.  Then I took the red paper lantern garland and when it arrived it's folded together, so when you open it up, it pops out to become a lantern.  Well I keep this unopened and then just painted the rims of it with my white.  I then popped it open and hung to dry, but this created a cute mod mini Cat in the the Hat's hat decorations!  Let me just say everyone loved them!  Sometimes you just have to think outside the box, for easy ways to decorate, get crafty and have a partay!

The tableware was perfect, the party pack I bought came with a bunch of things, balloons, streamers, string, plates, napkins, forks, spoons, tablecloth.  It was the perfect colors too, the simple red and Bermuda blue.  My husband argued with me that it could be any blue and red and I had to correct him and tell him, no it has to be Bermuda Blue.  I was right!  I just loved the way the tables turned out.

I also ordered this gorgeous blue velour Cat in the Hat chair and stool.  Omg, I just love this chair, it's absolutely adorable!  My little "Sally" sat in this chair to open her presents, and of course to get her picture taken, but now she just sits in this chair when she's reading or simply relaxing.  This chair was awesome because it doubled as a whimsical decoration as well as a gift for the birthday girl.

I just love Costumes4Less, if it weren't for them I wouldn't have been able to make such a tough theme work!  The kids had a blast and the decor was awesome!  I will certainly be retuning for all my party needs!

Diva Girl Boutique Dr. Seuss Thing 1 Dress #SeussBirthday

For my daughter's big number 3 birthday we decided to go with the theme Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat because my daughter was just obsessed with the show and movie.  I began thinking about what her birthday outfit would and the options seemed slim.  Dressing her up like the "Cat" in the Georgia heat seemed like a bad idea.  Well what about Thing 1 and 2?  These costumes were a bit to boyish for her and just not that cute.  I checked out Etsy where I found the fabulous Diva Girl Boutique...and the perfect outfit!

Diva Girl Boutique's Thing 1 outfit is definitely one of the cutest things I've ever seen in my life.

I'm so in love with it!  I can't even tell you the amount of compliments we got from this dress!  Diva Girl Boutique made this sweet little dress along with two matching bows.  The bows have little bottle caps in the middle, they are super cute too!

The dress itself has different sections of red and white stripes and blue dots, the blue dots accent the top with ruffles.  The top is red with white dots with a Thing 1 embroidered on the top.  The back is criss crossed and ties.  Sometimes I get weary about how hand-made things fit, but this fit perfectly, just perfect!  I loved the colors used in the dress, they are the exact colors I used for the whole party, matched wonderfully.

Diva Girl Boutique creates gorgeous birthday outfits,  custom clothing, over the top boutique hairbows,  knot tops, peasant tops, ruffle pants, jumpers,  sports team outfits, and hairbow holders!  She also does custom orders for any outfit in a different color or different fabric!

I want to thank the owner Candace for making this dress for my little Thing 1!   Like Diva Girl Boutique on Facebook for coupon codes and give aways!

I went to Sweet Chloes Cakes and asked if she would be able to come up a Cat in the Hat cake design for my daughter's birthday.  I was on limited time, so I just told her to go ahead with whatever she came up with.  I gave the owner Cristy complete creative freedom...

And I couldn't have been happier!

If I Could Sew Like A Pro...

If I could sew like a pro, I would be ambitious enough to open my own Etsy shop!  I suppose everyone starts somewhere- and somewhere for me was in high school.  I was so into the boho hippie look that I decided to make my own long patchwork skirts.  I really had no idea how to go about it, but with a few YouTube videos and home ec class I had enough knowledge to get started.  I went into Michaels and picked out a few of my favorite patterned fabrics and got straight to work!

What we think:
This book is too cool!  I'm so in love in the illustrations and colorful print, and so is my daughter!  We gave this to her right before her 3rd birthday after a couple weeks of teaching her that you have a birthday once a year and yours is coming soon!  She knew she was going to be 3 so when I read this too her she was filled with excitement!   She absolutely adores the little characters, turtles are her favorite right now.
